Live Sport
This is an example of live sport which uses multi-camera. The visual style of the clip is introduced at the beginning of the video at 00:01 straight away the use of more than one camera allows to set the scene of where the main event takes places and then slightly zooms in to where the actual sport is happening which allows the audience to be drawn in to the sport. The movement of the camera is quite swift and suttle such as at 00:16-00:20 as it slowly pans around the stadium allowing the audience to take in the scenery and get an idea of what going to take place. The camera movement at the beginning is slow and gives the effect of building up tension for the main event, which keeps the audience keen on watching what's going to happen next. The multiple cameras that are stationed around the arena so that they are able to capture the performers stunts in different angles such us at 13:21 the low angle shows what the performer is actually doing and the low angle also as the dramatic edge to it. Also the reason why live sport use multiple cameras is so that they are able to slow down certain aspects of the clip such is at 13:26 when the man is in the air the audience are able to see exactly what he is doing in more detail and also in these sports its more likely for spontaneous things to take place such us at 14:58 the man falls off his bike, and with out the use of multi-camera during these sort of events its unlikely that these moments would take be captured. There doesn't seem to be any constraints with this genre as from this clip the multiple cameras are able to capture the majority of the action in a wide scale such as at the beginning and during when participants are performing such as at 07:42 the long shot shows the audience the long shot shows the audience in shot and the performer which adds to having a bigger effect as you are able to see the audience reaction when he is doing the stunt. Also having it in such a wide area it allows the institution to put up more cameras so that more of the action is filmed even though it might cost them slightly more they would be gaining viewers which would increase there money values. Maintaining the viewers interest is crucial when it comes to live sport as every minute has to be engaging towards the audience and with the multiple use of camera this allows them to keep this concept such as at 10:26 the use of slow motion is able to captivate the audience more as it gets them to pay attention more and be more engaged with the show, if they only used one camera they wouldn't be able to shoot the action in different angles which would decrease the effect as each angle gives of a different sense of drama and tension for example at 10:28 they slow down the motion so that it builds the tension within the audience and makes them become more drawn into the action. The frequency of camera shot is quite rapid, as when it comes to a sports show there needs to a lot of quick camera changes so that it gives of the effect of the sport that is being record. If the camera shots were not fast paced then the show would be presented as boring and not engaging.
Public event
This here is an example of a public event which takes place in reading. The coverage of action for this type of event is done by using multiple cameras which makes it more off an entertaining event to watch as with more cameras you are able to catch more of the event and make it for fun for the audience. At the beginning of the clip at 00:01 we are presented with the stage and crowd which sets the scene for the viewers and seeing a massive audience creates the audience to continue watching and also builds up tension as the stage shot lasts until 00:12, with this static camera movement it makes the audience anticipated and wanting to know what they are going to be introduced to next. All the way from 00:01-00:35 the build up for the band increases as with multiple cameras it allows the production team to switch between camera shots and in this video one minute its the shot of the crowd then the next of the band, this type of camera movement allows the audience to begin to enjoy the video before its even started as if they only had one camera they would only be able to film one part of the show such as the audience when what you really want is both the band and audience to be shown not long after one another. Also at a public event multiple cameras allow to get shots of the audience in the crowd such as at 01:22 we get to see the energy within the crowd which helps build up what type of event it is and can also encourage the audience to join in etc. Public events also allow the audience to connect and communicate with the main performer as the camera movement is able to cover all what is happening even by including close-ups such as at 01:24, but they dont keep it static as in this part the camera is slowly moving around the artist which is making it more enjoyable to watch as if it was just static it wouldn't have the same effect which is why public events do not use only one camera as if they did it wouldn't be able to fully capture the band in action or the response there gaining from the audience. The constraints at a public event like this one could be the positioning of the cameras, as there is a big crowd you wouldn't want people barging and getting in the way which would ruin the shots and also it would become a problem for the institutions in the case the main host as if any cameras got damaged they would have to pay for new ones, which is why I think they are careful with how the position and place there equipment and hire the correct people that are able to use them. The visual style of this event is quite fast paced and includes a lot of camera movement which makes it pleasing for the audience such as at 09:07 the movement is quite smooth and captures whats going on and the reaction that they are receiving which allows the audience to take in the experience and become entertained with the event. The shots with the crowd as at 09:39 shows the audience how enjoyable that experience is and the style of the camera has to shoot shots of the audience as in most public events the audience is what makes the main event more interesting as if they have excited looks on their faces its going to have massive effect which is why the the visual style switches between cameras from he audience to performers so it builds up excitement and tension for a big finally. The frequency of the camera movement for when it comes to concerts is a mixture of camera language as it all depends on the time of artist which is playing. Such as if the artist is heavy metal the camera movements would be a lot quicker compared to an R&B artist. etc.
This image here shows the type of shots which happen frequently throughout this public event. |
Chat show
This genre here is an example of the use of multi-cameras.The static movement of the camera at 00:05 allows for the main presenter to introduce the show and helps set the scene such as at 00:25 which then slowly zooms into the two guests which straight away allows the audience to feel apart of the show. The mode of address at 00:05 allows the audience to feel that the presenter is directly talking to them, which makes them more keen on watching the show as they would begin to feel that they are a part of the show, also the static camera movement at 01:13 allows the audience at home to see the presenters and guest body language which from this clip here their body language is quite laid back and you can tell that they are friendly and comfortable around each other which then sets a calm and happy atmosphere and also at 1:13 we see the presenter expressing his hands which is allowing the audience to bring themselves in to their conversation and able to enjoy the show more. With one camera you would be able to capture the same scene, but the only reason why multi-camera is more suitable is so that they are able to switch from the presenters face to the guests to see their reaction to the question etc. The visual style of this show is quite calm and smooth as there isn't much action going on so there isn't a lot of need more the cameras to move about a lot, which gives the effect of the chat shows being able to have only one camera but at the same time it does need multiple cameras do catch the reactions of the presenter etc. The guests are what makes the show more entertaining such us at 02:21 we see the guest being more lively and being engaging with the audience, and not a lot of camera movement needs to be done to make it more entertaining, which might come under the constraints of using multi-camera as there not able to use amount of movement that they would wish to have as during the clip we don't get a glimpse of the audience reaction or a full shot of the audience and the stage, which shows that even though that chat shows do have more than one camera they can be restricted to how they would really like to use it. If this chat show didn't have the audience responses I.e clapping and cheering the show wouldn't have the effect that it has because they need the audience to respond to the presenter and his guest. Maintaining the viewers interest is seems to be fairly difficult when it comes to chat shows as there isn't much camera movement, but the edits between shots are quite quick such us at 06:49-06:50 which keeps the audience engaged but at the same time it could make them loose interest as when it comes to chat shows it depends on who is being interviewed, which is where I think both multiple- camera and single camera are both could be equally used for chat shows, as in the first place there isn't much movement going on and the majority of the shots are static.
Game Show
Game shows use a wide range of coverage of action so that they are able to capture the unpredicted moments that happen during the show and also with the use of multi-camera you are able to get the moments in different angles with each angle having a different effect on the audience such as at 3:11 the lower angle gives of a bigger impact on the audience rather than the higher angle at 3:09 as you are unable to see her facial expressions and the full impact on what she is going through. Game shows need multi-cameras so that they are able to capture the full extent of the game and maintain the viewers interest which includes the participants reactions and the course, if game shows only had one camera it wouldn't be able to grab the audiences attention as the game shows camera movement needs to be fast paced and exciting and with one camera the pace would lack and also look untidy as you wouldn't be able to capture everything you want for the audience. At 3:57 the use of different angles and multiple cameras allows the audience to gain humour out of the show which creates the show to be more entertaining, also with the use of more than one camera it allows the show to be able to replay certain parts of the show which will engage the audience more such as at 4:02 this part is slowed down as it adds the humorous tone to the genre and is able to captivate the audience more as if certain parts of the show weren't slowed down more its likely that it would decrease the audience as in game shows people want to get entertainment and humour out of it. If game shows only used one camera it wouldn't get the publicity that it should as they need to be fast paced and full of engaging humour, if they only used one it would be quite slow and boring as you need more than one to capture the full show. This game show doesn't really have any constraints when it come to multi-camera use as the shows location is mainly outside as at 1:05 we get a glimpse of the stadium, so they are able to have as many cameras as they need because the area is quite big and that way they are also able to capture more of the game show more and they are able to use the crane cameras which allow smooth and fast movement throughout the course and capturing more of it. The only problem that would occur would be the weather as you wouldn't want to damage expensive equipment in the rain, which would then affect the institution by them having to pay more money for new equipment. At the start of the clip at 1:25 the visual style is able to set the scene for the show and through out the rest of the clip the cameras movement is quite fast paced when the most action is happening which adds the energetic and lively tone to it and slow at some points as at 2:56 when the camera is following the participant the movement of the camera is able to add suspense and build up the tension within the audience.
Magazine show
This genre is a magazine show which uses multiple cameras to make the show more grasping for the audience and entertaining. The mode of address within this show is shown as being comfortable around each other as there body language at 1:15 suggests they the guests within the show are able to act themselves around each other and the static camera movement presents the atmosphere by having shots of where the guests are enjoying themselves, also the use of more than one camera allows to switch to one person to the next and this is important when it comes to a magazine show as you need to be able to get everyone reactions to the topic and with the use of only one camera you wouldn't be able to do it as well as the
movement of the camera would be all over the place and it would be boring just to have a camera in one position through out a 30 minute show. Also the static movement at 1:54 allows the audience to feel as if they are being directly spoken to as the presenter keeps eye contact with the camera adding the formal tone of the show and bringing the audience in more. The multiple cameras are able to show the viewers the relationship between the guests and the audience as at 2:25- 2:29 the camera moves between the the two which is creating an identity for the show being represented as being friendly towards its audience and also engaging them in there show. In magazine shows they aesthetic movement of the camera is quite fast and slow as when the guests are answering questions such as at 00:42 it is quickly moved on to the reaction of another guest which creates the atmosphere within the audience if the reaction is humorous. On magazine shows they need to keep quickly cutting within shots to maintain the viewers interest as that way it allows the audience to still stay focused on the topic at hand and if they used only one camera they would have to stay in the same spot for a while then move and change the angle etc which would just make the show look unprofessional and if the show wasn't having smooth camera language its likely that the audience wouldn't take the show seriously and wouldn't have that much of an interest in it. There wouldn't be many constraints for a magazine show as the camera would be set up appropriately and will have professionals working on them so that they are able to capture the full extent of what the show is. The set up for the location would be thought out well as the need to be able to capture the guests and audience in and they need both of there reactions to make the show have its full effect on the viewers at home. With only having a set-up of one camera during a magazine show the camera operator wouldn't be able to get all of the shots that are continuous and fluent, as continuity is vital throughout these sort of shows as the cameras must be able to share the atmosphere repetitively and able to create identity's for the guests, if there is not fluency throughout magazine shows the audience would loose interest as the reactions for the guests would feel delayed towards the viewers. Also during magazine shows the cameras allow for representations to be created within the characters as the audience will be putting together character profiles of each guest on the show and starting to have their favourites. The camera language helps create these identity by depending on the movement of the camera such as if the camera is one person for a split second it would present them as being not as important as the rest such as at 0:20 the camera is only on the man for a few seconds and then moves on quickly to the other guest reactions. This could be considered as a typical magazine show as they need to have as many reactions as possible but during that they also determine who is the most important and usually on these shows it is the presenter.
Talent showmovement of the camera would be all over the place and it would be boring just to have a camera in one position through out a 30 minute show. Multi-camera is suitable for a talent genre as it is able to capture the performers actions and also the audiences reactions. A practical reason why this genre must use multi-camera is because with this type of show you are more likely to catch spontaneous moments because that way it is a able to have a bigger impact on the audience as in this clip at 2:42 the close up of the man swallowing the snooker ball adds tension and suspense within the audience as well as the judges, if something went wrong with the use of multi-camera it would be able to get captured while with only one camera you wouldn't be able to capture the moment or the reactions of the audience and the performer, which wouldn't be good for the institution because the audience is what makes part of the show and without them the show wouldn't have the effect that it does. Also with the use of multi-camera we are able to see the crowds reactions and the judges, such as 3:01 the static movement of the camera is able to create a silent atmosphere and also build up the tension and at 3:05 the visual style of the camera is quite smooth which gives of a triumph effect as we are able to get a shot of the audience applauding the performer. A talent show needs a multi-camera set-up as the movement of the camera needs to be continuous and fluent, such as in this clip here from 1:44-1:50 the continuous motion of the camera allows the performers act be captured and at the same time as the audience reactions. If this show only used one camera they wouldn't be able to keep this effect as, with one camera you would have to keep turning it which would make the movement of the camera scatty and also you wouldn't be able to capture the reactions of the audience at the right time, when you want to get there reactions the minute something shocking happens etc.
Concert
The use of multi-camera during concerts is able to maintain the viewers interest as it gives the audience a glimpse of what the bands concert are like with the different ranges of camera movement it is able to capture the full experience of the concert and can encourage the audience to go to one of the bands performances. At 3:38 with the use of multi-camera it is able to set the scene and bring the audience in more, as well the editing the pace of the clip is quite fast which matches the tempo of the concert which creates an energetic and entertaining effect and makes the audience able to enjoy the show more. One camera wouldn't be able to capture the full extent of a concert and have the movement that is needed, as filming with one camera you wouldn't be able to gather the audiences reaction which is quite a main part when it comes to concerts as you want to be able to see if there reactions are good or not and helps you make decisions about the band itself, also with one camera you would have to move it about quite a lot to get different shots, but this way it would make it look all over the place and also risking missing spontaneous moments. constraints of the studio are not massive, but they would have to position the cameras in the right places such as at 04:23 and 04:42 with the use of multi-camera you are able to capture the bands performance in different angles and movement which is able to engage the audience more. Also at concerts it likely for spontaneous events to take place and with the use of multi-camera its more likely to be captured while with on camera it would be hard to capture both the performer and audiences reaction to the same mis-hap. The visual style of this genre all depends on the type of music concert, as this clip is of a rock concert the style of the cuts to each different camera is quite fast paced as it needs to get the audiences attention and it also includes a graceful slow movement such as at 28:36 which is able to present the audience reaction to the band and is able to give a full view of their performance.
